Recently, one of my friends posted this link on Facebook. I’m going to try to answer one a day. I’m very much “pro self-contemplation”, and I tend to think more clearly when I write out my thoughts. Enjoy my brain, folks.

2. What would make you feel embarrassed in public?

When I was younger, my parents were the bane of my existence. I thought they were the most embarrassing people on the planet. After all, when you’re fourteen years old, your mom and dad are the lamest people alive, right? Not to say that they aren’t embarrassing anymore (they most certainly still are), but it doesn’t bother me as much.

I can’t help but feel as if getting embarrassed by things has a direct correlation with one’s self confidence. If you’re secure in yourself, it takes quite a lot to embarrass you. 

That being said, I get embarrassed if I’m talking to someone and I have food stuck in my teeth or something on my face that isn’t supposed to be there (stray booger? ugh, yes). I’d also probably be incredibly embarrassed if I farted in public… but girls don’t poop or fart, so I have nothing to worry about there.

It’s funny: once the question of “What embarrasses you?” is posed, the follow-up question would have to be “Why is that embarrassing?” After looking at my (albeit short) list, I can’t help but see the correlation between my perceived femininity and my answers. I don’t think it’s very cute to have a big ol’ piece of broccoli stuck in your teeth; in fact, it’s incredibly unattractive. Likewise, flatulence is quite possibly the least ladylike thing I can think of. Therefore I must be insecure about the way the world perceives my looks and, consequently, my femininity. 

Perhaps this stems from a fear of being alone/never getting married, or from some childhood trauma, or (most likely) from my previous bouts with an eating disorder. Regardless, I’m grateful to now be aware of such a thing and be able to start praying into that area of my life. Feel free to join me, I’d love the help.
